Self Harm is the deliberate harming of yourself, which can take place in many different forms. The most common of these are: cutting, burning, head-banging, pulling out hair and many more.
Self harm is also known as self-injury or self mutilation and it is usually most common in teenagers, but it has been known to occur in adults and children too.
Self harm is not usually a suicide method, but more likely a way for people to deal with their emotional feelings. A lot of people who self harm say that by harming themselves it makes them feel better, they try to convert the emotional pain into physical pain in order to deal with it easier. People also say it helps them to feel something when they are numb.
When someone hurts themselves, it releases a "happy" chemical from the brain called serotonin. It is a natural endorphin and makes the self harmer feel temporarily "better".
Many people who self harm feel like they are the only person who does it, but in reality, this is far from the truth. It sadly seems that more and more people are doing it now. Some people are now also doing it as a fashion statement, but this should not be assumed as the case for everyone, because it is a small minority that are doing it for this reason.
Self harm is also addictive, and when people start doing it, they do not realise this.
